About Us

Sussex Tiling School, based in Lancing West Sussex has been running since 2006. During this time the tiling school has trained many individuals to a high standard.

History

Photo of Phil Burton, founder of Sussex Tiling SchoolSussex Tiling School was started by Phil Burton, an experienced tiler who ran his own tiling business for many years delivering tiling services to both domestic customers and the construction industry.

Over this time Phil became acutely aware that there was a gap in the training market as he found it increasingly difficulty to get craftsmen who could meet his, and his clients' exacting quality standards. In fact he became affectionately known in the local area as 'Phil the Fussy Tiler' because of his care and attention to detail.

Recognising the need to increase the industry's practical skills base Sussex Tiling School was established so that professional tiling training could be delivered to individuals.

Phil holds an NVQ level 2 in Wall and Floor Tiling (Construction) and an ABC Level 3 Certificate in Facilitating Learning.

Course Structure

The courses run by Sussex Tiling School are a mix of theory, demonstration, and 'hands-on' work to practice new skills being learnt. The school teaches the correct way to fix tiles as recommended by tile and tile adhesive manufacturers.

Course sizes are kept to a maximum of 8 students to ensure the highest level of tuition is available to all course members.

Courses are designed to cater for a wide range of skills from the DIY enthusiast through to tiling professionals.

To monitor and improve the quality of our courses we operate pre and post-course surveys to ensure the course you go on meets your expectations. You can read some of the feedback here.

DIY Enthusiast

For the DIY enthusiast who wants to learn or gain confidence in how to fix tiles in a professional manner Sussex Tiling School offer 1 and 2 day DIY courses run on weekends, weekdays, and evenings.

These courses will teach you the basics of wall or floor tiling sufficient to be able to carry out small tiling jobs around the house.

Please see our Course Calendar for details of all available courses.

Tiling Professionals

The longer general tiling courses are geared towards the needs of full time tilers with a focus on the more complex aspects of tiling.

The Beginner and Intermediate courses are aimed at the competent DIY'er or tiler who is looking to add additional skills. The Beginner course assumes no tiling experience whereas the Intermediate course assumes some previous tiling experience.

The Advanced and Professional courses include practical advice and information about starting a tiling business including internet marketing, customer service, estimating and invoicing, accountancy, and tax.

As in all careers, experience gained over many years cannot be learnt in a few weeks as each tiling assignment has its own unique challenges. Sussex Tiling School aims to introduce you to the more common problems and solutions found when working on-site.

Telephone support is available to those individuals who have completed the Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Professional courses. The help line is there to cover technical support relating to course subjects covered on your course.

Please see our Course Comparator page for details of the scope of all our courses or visit our Course Calendar to enrol on a course.

Specialised Courses

Sussex Tiling School also offers specialised tiling courses which are designed to give tilers a broader breadth of skills with which to market their services.

For the competent DIY'er these specialised courses represent an opportunity to understand what is achievable and how best to approach a tiling situation either by DIY or calling in a professional.

Specialised courses are run 'on request' and individually tailored to meet the needs of those enrolled. A pre-course discussion will be held to ensure that training needs are met.

Please see our Specialised Tiling Courses page for details of available courses.
